The Bramble Cay Melomys (Melomys rubicola) was a small rodent that lived on a tiny island in the waters between Australia and Papua New Guinea. In 2019, the Australian government officially declared it extinct - the first mammal in recorded history globally confirmed to have gone extinct as a direct result of climate change. Rising seas inundated its only habitat, destroying its food supply and eliminating the species entirely.
